Interview with Bruno BALNY
Could you introduce yourself?
As a general engineer, I earned my degree after gaining experience in various industries: automotive, oil and gas, defense, civil engineering, nuclear, chemical, and petrochemical.
Today, the simplest way to describe me is as a experienced professional who applies all of his skills and knowledge, acquired over more than 30 years, to address industrial challenges and support my clients’ projects.
Why did you start a company?
In my previous roles, I was a true jack-of-all-trades, dedicated to my clients’ success across a wide range of areas, often with difficult priorities to balance. At a certain point in my career, I felt the need to work differently and to focus on specific areas of my expertise while setting others aside. From this need arose the ideaof supporting manufacturers in addressing their challenges. That is why I chose to start a company. Today, this freedom allows me to offer my clients tailored solutions that can even include commitments regarding return on investment.
What are people saying about you?
I think we can use this anecdote with a well-known recruitment firm:
“Mr. BALNY, my requirements don’t match your profile. I’m looking for someone for a large industrial group for whom we’ve mapped out a career path that this person will follow. I’m afraid that might bore you. You’re the kind of person who just needs to be given expectations because you have all the skills to carve out your own path.”
This story shows that I’m a man who thrives on challenges and enjoys using unconventional methods to achieve my goals. Some of my former colleagues would add that I’m tenacious and that, naturally, I know how to bring out the best in my team members to get the job done.
What drives you?
I am passionate about improving profitability, addressing recurring operational challenges, and managerial and technical coaching. My approach is, in most cases, unconventional but always ensures my clients are satisfied. I like to think that passion is contagious and leads to excellence.
What value do you offer?
It is difficult to discuss added value without explaining the process I follow with my client, as my role lies at the intersection of several factors:
Profitability – Pragmatism – The individual preferences of the client’s team.
I often receive a phone call from a client’s management team expressing a pressing need: “Can you help me get my project back on track and stop the financial bleeding it’s causing?”
In most cases, the client’s project team has already begun the process of diagnosing issues and collecting data—work that is often too time-consuming to be useful in its current state. Regardless of where the project stands (early, mid, or late stages), I provide a tailored solution that typically takes the following form:
- At the start of a project, I often propose technical and contractual management service within the client’s own teams, while maintaining direct contact with their management. This service typically unfolds in three phases: diagnosis – action plan / management – evaluation.
- In the middle or at the end of a project, I tend to focus my support onone-off sitevisits, proposing interim milestones, revising the project timeline, and finally preparingcost estimates to assist my client with their project.
What do you mean by an action plan / management?
This summary explains that within a project team, I will have one of the following roles:
- Coaching in implementing strategic decisions made in consultation with the client’s management following my assessment
- Contract and/or Technical Manager to guide the work of field teams in accordance with the client’s management following my assessment
When did you start your business?
ING&DEM’s articles of incorporation were filed in 2022, but I had already put my approach into practice through my various roles and opportunities. Since 2011, I have been refining my consulting services—initially very technical, then very contractual, and now I tend to systematically combine the two based on clients’ needs and the progress of their projects. SME operations are cyclical, with key milestones to meet. The three-year mark is the first. To help clients reach this milestone, I’ve chosen to focus specifically on long-term engagements lasting between 12 and 18 months within the same industry, covering a variety of topics.
What are your plans for the future?
As we mark our 5th anniversary, my goal is to expand ING&DEM’s activities intonew industrial sectors andfocus on shorter-term projects where I can provide even greater value,as well as on coaching.
